Another thing where the date will be helpful is for managing different time zones. The site is setup on UTC or GMT+0, so those of us up writing early or late may find their totals are banked on a different day than expected. (For example, I noticed when I entered my totals for Sept 7 yesterday evening that the site was going to bank it for Sept 8, as the site’s time zone is 5 hours ahead of me.)
