Nice to meet another Laura Ingalls Wilder and football fan. I find the two rarely overlap. I look forward to reading that intro when you get it ready.
We live only about 10 miles away from one of the largest fires, but they are over a mountainous hill and near the coast. While the air has been filled with thick smoke for the past few weeks (my house smells like a campfire), our home is safe, thanks for asking, and I expect the mountainous hill in between might act as sort of a fire break. They are finally beginning to get the fires under control, but it will be a few more week at least until they are completely extinguished.
For those living outside of the United States, California experienced a very rare lightning storm about two weeks ago. The lightning started over 350 wildfires up and down the length of the state, with the greatest number being in Northern California, where I live. I consider myself lucky to be safe. Thousands have lost their homes.
