I’m in Southampton UK, a maritime city known for its famous departures – Mayflower 1620, Titanic 1912 and a less famous welcome – 4000 child refugees from the Spanish Civil War on the SS Habana in 1937. My middle grade story’s about the welcome.
Re genre, I love great characters! Surprised myself that my fave book last year was a chunky fantasy – We Are the Dead by Mike Shackle. Normally, I’d say fantasy was my least favourite thing to read.
Fave authors include Kate Atkinson, Anne Tyler, Fannie Flagg, Frank Cottrell Boyce but I have a ton of fave books – the two I re-read regularly are The Mayor of Casterbridge and Anne of Green Gables!
In the academy, I’m going to get my MG historical out there – the one about the welcome – it’s book 2 in a series of 3, first one’s out. Also want to write first draft of Book 3 and finish a contemporary-ish (do I inject covid or not?) novel for older readers. I’ve had this one on the go for ages.
Biggest writing dream is to see one of my stories made into a film.
