I’m hoping to learn those tricks as I go! What works best for me so far is just focusing on one at a time. I draft one piece end-to-end, then put it in a drawer and switch to the other – so you’re not constantly ‘switching’ which leads to me blurring the lines. (Although a cosy mystery on a Mars base might be interesting, if muddled!)
As for keeping focused on only one (or two) ideas – write the others down! I have a document full of ideas, some of which might make for series and some I’m sure won’t work, but getting them out of my head lets me say to the little voice ‘OK, I hear you, but not right now’. Then I know the idea will always be there if & when I need it, but I don’t have to keep it in my head at all times, so it leaves me alone to work.
What genres are you going to be working in?
